In dit oude, maar bewerkte sprookje, volgen we het verhaal van de arme molenaarszoon, Jaap. Als de vader van Jaap komt te overlijden, erft hij slechts een poes. Jaap verlaat samen met zijn poes het ouderlijk huis. Als de poes leert praten, ontmoeten ze de meest gekke figuren en komen ze terecht in bizarre situaties.
